College of DuPage took control in its game against South Suburban on Thursday, grabbing the lead early in the first quarter in the Chaps' 64-40 NJCAA Division II Region 4 (Midwest District A) women's basketball quarterfinal victory.
The victory places the Chaps (17-13 overall) into Saturday's semifinals, where they face No. 1 seed Rock Valley in Rockford.
Megan Martinez led four Chaps in double figures with 13 points.
Jaylen Zachary added 12 and
Madeline Maracich and
Teegan Roach each scored 10.
South Suburban grabbed a 3-0 lead 20 seconds into the game and that was its only lead of the game. COD answered back, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-3 the remainder of the quarter.
The Chaps led 35-22 at halftime and led by as many as 27 points (59-32) with 5:40 left in the game.
Makenna Brown led in rebounds with 10 and Martinez grabbed eight. COD totaled 17 steals with Martinez leading the way with four.
Adriana Villanova and
Kaisje Pryor each had three.
COD, which has won five of its last six games, advances to the regional semis for the first time in D2 play. It faces an arduous task Saturday against the host Golden Eagles, who have defeated the Chaps 30 straight times over the last 15 years.
COD's last victory over the Golden Eagles was a 45-43 decision on Feb. 2, 2010.
