Kallas earns All-American honors in pole vault

Freshman pole vaulter William Kallas performed with consistency all indoor season for the Chaparrals.

The Riverside native capped the indoor portion of the Chaps season, clearing a career-high 4.63 meters (15 feet, 2 ¼ inches) and finishing seventh at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Lubbock, Texas.

Kallas, who earned All-American honors from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCCA) opened competition at 4.33 meters after passing at the opening height of 4.18.

He cleared on his first attempt and then continued the competition when he cleared 4.48 on his first attempt.

At 4.63, he cleared on his second attempt before closing out the competition with three attempts at 4.73 (15-6 ¼).

New Mexico Junior College's Samuel Etrada Ospina won the event at 5.12 m (16-9 1/2).

Kallas cleared at least 4.26 m (13-11 ¾) in all six of COD's indoor events this season.

The NJCAA honors the top three individuals with All-American honors. The USTFCCCA recognizes All-American honors for the top eight in each event for those teams whose coaches have membership).

COD sent three athletes to the championship. Sprinter Tim McMiller ran 7.04 in the preliminaries, while high jumper Ronan Cornelius cleared 1.94 meters (6-4 ¼).
