Women's Volleyball Wraps up season preview at Opening Weekend Tournament

Back Row at OWT 2025
After going 2-0 on day 1 of the Opening Weekend Tournament the Chaps took to the court to try and finish with a clean sweep.

The Chaparrals beat two preseason NJCAA favorites in Finger Lakes Community College and St. Cloud Community College on day 1.

Over the last three seasons, the Chaparrals have won the NJCAA Division III National Championship, finished in 5th place, and last year took home another trophy with claiming third place.  This stretch has been a pretty good run from a coaching staff that just won their 200th match.  Head Coach Tolis Koskinaris cannot hide his sheepish grin as yesterday's win was yet another milestone in his illustrious career as head coach of both men's and women's team.  Not to be outdone is Tolis's right hand as Frankie Martinez has sat along side Coach Koskinaris for each and every one of the 200 victories.  After winning against St. Cloud in yesterday's second game, Coach Koskinaris had this to say about the milestone.  "It's never easy, each win is a collective effort from my tremendous staff.  Grateful to Frankie, Cynthia, and Braden for their continued support during these last several year's. The player's I've had the ability to coach are great players, but even better people."

Day two started with a foe that is familiar to College of DuPage.  Century College out of Minnesota was who College of DuPage faced in the third place game at last year's NJCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship.  DuPage was in an absolute battle with it being a five set thriller of (24-26, 25-22, 30-32, 25-22, 17-15).  Many patrons at last seasons National Championship tagged this game as the match of the tournament as both teams took each other's best shot, going toe to toe for five grueling sets.  Ultimately, the Chaps were victorious and brought home a 3rd place trophy which was a tremendous accomplishment considering they were seen as having a down year.

In the first game versus preseason NJCAA #9 Century College, the Chaparrals were able to go on a run very early on in the set which set them up for victory.  Tied 3-3, DuPage was able to rattle off several points in a row to take a commanding lead at 9-4.  The Chaps ground and pounded the Wood Ducks beating them handedly 25-16.  The Chaps continued with scoring early and often in the second game clipping Century 25-20 in set two.  The beat down continued for the Chaps as they hit for an astonishing .542 percentage having only 1 attack error in the third set.  The Chaps easily took down the Wood Ducks in the third and final set for a sweep on the day winning 25-14.

The Chaparrals are now 3-0 on the year being Century College 25-16, 25-20, and 25-14.   The Lady Chaps now have a three game winning streak beating all NJCAA preseason top 10 opponents.  The Chaparrals have one more game versus Rochester Techincal College later on this afternoon.

In the second match of the day the Lady Chaparrals faced off versus Rochester Technical Community College of Rochester, Minnesota.  A back and forth match saw both teams struggle to put each other away.  In the first set, Rochester came from behind to win as the match went into extra points as the Yellow Jackets came away with a 24-26 win.  Rochester continued the dominance from there as they really took it to the Chaps and got them down early and held on for a 16-25 second set win.  The third set was where DuPage finally got a little offense on the day and came away with a 25-20 third set victory.  The fourth set saw another back and forth seesaw game with the Chaparrals coming away with a nail bitter and a 26-24 win.  Unfortuatenly, the Lady Chaparrals got off to a slow start in the fifth set and couldn't get enough offense going late and fell in the fifth set 10-15.  The loss for the Chaparrals was the first of the season and it was to its first unranked team.

College of DuPage Women's Volleyball is now 3-1 on the season with three wins over preseason nationally ranked teams.
