All eyes were on the Track & Field Center at Gately Park in Chicago as the College of DuPage women's track & field team opened its season at the Gately AU Grand Prix on Jan. 24. The Chaparrals turned in an impressive opening meet, highlighted by record-breaking performances and multiple national qualifying marks.
Freshman
Kailee Rodeck led the way, placing third in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.57 meters (11 feet, 8 1/2 inches). The mark shattered the previous indoor school record of 3.41 meters set by Patrycja Karpiesiuk just last season. Rodeck's performance also earned her an automatic qualification for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in Topeka, Kansas.
Adriana Villanova also had a strong showing for the Chaps, qualifying for the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships in Utica, New York in two events. Villanova recorded a mark of 9.38 meters in the triple jump and cleared 1.44 meters in the high jump, earning outdoor national qualifying standards in both.
Brianne Davis added to DuPage's national qualifiers, earning an outdoor national bid in the shot put.
Head coach Mallory Dominguez was pleased with the team's opening performance.
"As for the meet overall, I think we had some really great performances to open up," Dominguez said. "We hit 16 outdoor qualifying marks and two indoor qualifying marks. It was a strong start in the field events, with 13 of the 16 outdoor qualifying marks coming in those events. We definitely still have a way to go as the kids continue to get in shape, but we're looking forward to continuing on at ONU this week."
Dominguez also praised Rodeck's historic debut.
"Kailee's mark was pretty exciting to see, breaking a school record and finishing third overall in her collegiate debut," Dominguez said. "We're really proud of her and excited for what's ahead this season, as we know she's just scratching the surface of her potential."
