The College of DuPage men's track & field team continued its indoor season with its second meet of the year, traveling to Bourbonnais, Illinois to compete in the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational.
Sophomore pole vaulter William Kallas highlighted the day for the Chaparrals, breaking the program's indoor pole vault record with a clearance of 5.00 meters (16 feet, 4¾ inches). The previous record of 4.88 meters had stood since 2020 and was held by Kyle Kruthoff. Kallas' performance also moves him to third in the NJCAA rankings.
DuPage also saw strong performances across the field events. Peter Ogunleye placed fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.77 meters (5 feet, 9¾ inches), while Dionte Shaw finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 15.11 meters (49 feet, 7 inches). Following the meet, Shaw and teammate Tayo now sit 11th and 12th nationally in the NJCAA shot put rankings.
Several Chaparrals turned in personal records and season-best performances. Jaishawn Morris posted significant PRs in both the shot put and weight throw, an impressive accomplishment as the men's collegiate weight increases from 12 pounds to 16 pounds. Matt Edborg recorded a PR in the weight throw, while David Aviles ran PRs in both the mile and 800 meters. Kevin Myrick notched season-best times in the 200 meters, and Ogunleye added a season best in the 200 to complement his high jump result.
Head coach Mallory Dominguez was encouraged by the team's continued development.
"Dionte and Tayo are currently ranked 11th and 12th in the NJCAA shot put after this weekend. Jaishawn had substantial PRs in both the shot put and weight throw, which is impressive considering the men's weight increases from 12 pounds to 16 pounds at the collegiate level. Matt Edborg also earned a PR in the weight throw, and Will Kallas moved to third in the NJCAA after a big 5.00-meter PR. David Aviles ran PRs in the mile and 800, while Kevin Myrick recorded season bests in the 200 and Peter Ogunleye in both the high jump and 200. Like the women, I think the men are progressing well. While the field events are certainly standing out, the transition from a banked track to a flat 200 just six days later isn't easy for the track events. Still, having PRs and season bests is great. We're excited to race a few men who haven't competed yet this coming weekend and are looking forward to the 300-meter facility."
The Chaparrals return to action on Feb. 7, traveling to Allendale, Michigan to compete in the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Open.
