The College of DuPage men's tennis team took on Waubonsee Community College on April 1. The match was played indoors at the Vaughan Athletic Center due to cold weather, and COD pulled out a 7-2 victory over the Chiefs.
"We were glad to get the match completed today and play where there was no wind, sun, or weather distractions, and it was just pure tennis skill that determined the outcome," said head coach Jim Bowers.
The Chaparrals earned several strong wins in singles play. Brandon Dumbell led the way at No. 1 singles with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory. Giovanni Velasco secured a win at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Alex Cook followed with a 6-3, 6-0 decision, while Pablo Espinosa posted a shutout 6-0, 6-0 victory. COD continued its success across the singles lineup, earning wins at multiple positions to build a comfortable advantage.
In doubles play, Dumbell and Velasco earned a shutout 8-0 victory at No. 1.
"We started with doubles and our No. 1 team showed that they are one of the top teams in the region," Bowers said. "They got an 8-0 win with well-placed serves, strong net play, and solid returns."
Bowers also noted the team's resilience in tougher matchups.
"We were tested at a few other spots and our men showed resilience and problem solving by figuring out how to generate their own pace and spin to overcome the soft and unorthodox play that came their way," Bowers said. "When a clean ball doesn't come your way, you have to get dirty and play scrappy to figure out the win, and our players did that mostly. We didn't perform that way at No. 2 doubles, but at least our student-athletes are aware of their deficiencies so we can work on correcting it in the future."
The Chaparrals will host their first home match of the season on April 6 versus Oakton.
