The College of DuPage men's tennis team hosted Oakton on April 6 for its first home match of the season. The Chaps won by a score of 7-2 to improve to 3-1 on the year.
"It was a cool, brisk day with a slight wind, and I was concerned it could affect our play, especially if the wind picked up, but the men's team stepped up and fought through the tough conditions," said head coach Jim Bowers.
The No. 1 doubles squad of Brandon Dumbell and Giovanni Velasco earned an 8-1 victory. The Chaps also secured No. 2 doubles, with Nicholas Williams and Alex Cook earning a 9-8 (7-5) win in a tiebreak.
In singles play, Dumbell picked up another win with a 6-1, 6-3 result. Velasco won at No. 3 singles in a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 match tiebreak. Pablo Espinoza also earned a victory at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Zachary Gilbert rounded out the DuPage winners at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) decision.
"Many matches could have gone in the other direction with all of these tiebreakers, but to get through the matches with so many wins was a true test for us," Bowers said. "It will help us with our seeds at the regional tournament and definitely build our confidence as the season rolls along."
The Chaps will travel to Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby on April 8.
