The College of DuPage women's basketball program led early but couldn't close out against the Waubonsee Community College Chiefs on Thursday, Dec. 4, returning to Glen Ellyn on the wrong side of a 77-55 ballgame.
The Chiefs' offense stalled in the first minutes of the opening quarter before erupting to a 24-14 lead after the frame. The Chaparrals clawed back with a much closer second-quarter, trailing by eight points at halftime.
After the break, a slow third quarter proved to be the difference-maker down the stretch in favor of WCC, as the Chaps could only muster nine points in the period.
COD outscored Waubonsee 16-15 in the final ten minutes but it wasn't enough for a Chaps comeback.
Freshman
Erin Brown led DuPage statistically with an 11-point and 13-rebound double-double.
Ayaani Gusman was the leading scorer for COD with 15 points including four made free throws.
Jamie Hasemann was the only other Chaparral in double-digits with a career-high 13 points.
Cailey Salerno dished out three assists and had the lone DuPage block of the ballgame.
COD (1-7) will try to snap the losing streak at Kennedy-King College in Chicago on Monday, Dec. 8 at 5pm. This will be the first contest between the two schools since the COVID-19 pandemic.
