The Chaparrals needed late-game patience and mounted a come-from-behind 6-5 victory against visiting College of Lake County.
COD (2-8 overall, 2-0 Region 4), which earned its second straight victory, broke out with a three-run first. Singles from
Matt McBrien and
Joe Pender set the table for
Cullen Kleinsasser, who then laced a two-run double.
One out later, COD pushed the lead to 3-0 when Kleinsasser scored on an RBI single from
AJ Fulscher.
The Lancers answered back with three runs in the second inning. They pushed the lead to 5-3 with runs in the fourth and fifth.
COD tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth. Kleinsasser led off with a double and moved to the third on a passed ball.
Zach Glidewell sent a sac fly to right to score Kleinsasser. Fulscher followed with a double and three batters later,
Anthony Titone earned an RBI on a sac fly to left.
The Chaps then went ahead in the eighth when they sent seven to the plate.
Michael Morgan scored the game-winning run when McBrien was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Sophomore RHP
AJ Burnett got the start for COD. He lasted four innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits, five walks, and seven strikeouts.
RHP freshman
Jayce Maranell came on in the fifth, allowing a run. Sophomore closer
Jimmy Traficanti earned the victory with no-hit ball in four innings, striking out three and facing the minimum.
COD plays Monday at Highland. First pitch is noon.
