Freshman All-American pole vaulter
William Kallas, who earned All-American honors at the NJCAA indoor championship and then added the NJCAA D3 outdoor championship to his resume, is this year's United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCCA) Male Field Athlete of the Year.
Kallas was unbeaten against junior college competition in both indoor and outdoor and cleared a personal-best 4.85 m (15 feet, 11 inches) at the St. Louis University meet March 28. That height was 50 centimeters (20 inches) higher than his next closest competition this spring.
At indoors, he placed seventh by clearing 4.63 m (15-2 ¼) and earlier this month, won the D3 outdoor championship at 4.50 m (14-9).
The Riverside native and Riverside-Brookfield HS alum also ran the 400 m in a personal-best 50.69 and ran on the Chaps' third-place 4 x 400 relay (3:26.59 — 51.34 split).
Kallas was earlier named the USTFCCCAÂ NJCAA D3 Central Field Athlete of the Year.
