The College of DuPage men's track & field team opened its indoor season on Jan. 24 at the Track & Field Center at Gately Park in Chicago, turning in an impressive showing that featured nine individual performances qualifying for the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships in Utica, New York this May.
Leading the way was
William Kallas, who captured first place in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 4.75 meters (15 feet, 7 inches). The mark also earned Kallas a qualifying spot for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in Topeka, Kansas, and currently ranks him fourth in the nation among all NJCAA competitors, including Division I institutions.
Tayo Taiwo also delivered a strong performance in the throws, placing third in both the shot put (15.12 meters, 49 feet, 7 1/4 inches) and the weight throw (15.26 meters, 50 feet, 3/4 inch). Taiwo recorded a personal-best improvement of seven feet in the weight throw.
"As a meet overall, I think we had really great performances to open up," said head coach Mallory Dominguez. "We had 16 outdoor qualifying marks and two indoor qualifying marks. (Across both programs) It was a strong start in the field events, with Will already hitting indoor qualifications, and 13 out of our 16 outdoor qualifiers coming from the field."
"In our track events, Ben, Kevin, and Adriano had a stellar start in the 400 meters and 5,000 meters," Dominguez said. "They put in the work this offseason and it shows. We still have a ways to go as the kids continue to get into shape, but we're looking forward to continuing at ONU this week."
