Sarah Topps drained a 20-foot 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to give the Chaparrals a 45-43 victory over College of Lake County in Region 4 women's basketball Tuesday night.
Â
The victory pushes the Chaps to a 3-5 overall record entering play Thursday night at home against Southwestern Michigan. Tipoff is 5:15 p.m.
Â
Down 43-42 with three seconds left, the Chaps came out of a timeout intending to work the ball to sophomore
Sierra Gibson. Topps got the ball at the top of the key and hoisted a shot that hit nothing but net for the game winner.
Â
"We played to the very end and didn't give up,'' head coach
Abigail Talley said. "Holding them to 43 points and only eight in the fourth quarter says a lot about hanging in there. Sarah had a clear look and nailed it.''
Â
The Chaps got back into the game with a pair of 3-pointers from
Delmarea Willis and Amber Rohde in the fourth quarter — their only points of the game.
Â
Gibson finished with 17 points and Topps and
Nala Taylor each had seven.
Â
COD created 27 CLC turnovers and benefitted from its 13 steals.
Â
"Gotta credit our defense for keeping us in the game,'' Talley said.
