Chaparrals dealt 15-7 loss in 7 innings in World Series opener

An eight-run fourth inning by No. 2-seed Dallas College-Richland broke a 7-7 tie against the No. 7-seeded Chaparrals and the Thunderducks went on to a 15-7 victory that was called in the seventh inning during opening-round play Saturday afternoon at the NJCAA Division III Baseball World Series in Auburn, N.Y., on Saturday.

The Chaps (31-17 overall) had their 15-game winning streak snapped and they now play in the loser-out bracket against No. 6-seed St. Cloud Tech, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Eastern on Sunday.

SCTC (32-13) lost to Dallas College-Eastfield 7-2 in the opener.

"We absolutely can compete with everyone else here,'' interim head coach Matt Gould said. "We did well in all other areas of the game, but our pitching wasn't there today. I know we're not going to have two days in a row where we don't have it on the mound. We take care of all the other stuff and we'll be all right (tomorrow).''

COD scored four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 7-7, but in their half of the inning, the Thunderducks batted around for the second time. They sent 13 to the plate, scoring eight runs and effectively ended the game.

"The first four innings of the game, we had good at-bats,'' Gould said. "We hit the ball hard and were aggressive on the bases and made them make mistakes. But in the bottom of the inning, we just didn't throw strikes. We throw more strikes, we get out of the inning a lot faster than we did. I'll take my odds in a back-and-forth game, but the inning just lasted too long.''
