Martinez delivers offense in 74-72 win

Sophomore guard Megan Martinez scored a career-high 31 points with five 3-pointers as visiting College of DuPage held off Joliet Junior College 74-72 in Region 4 women's basketball Thursday night.

COD improved to 11-11 overall and 11-9 in Region 4 entering Saturday's home contest against Kishwaukee College (2-16, 2-14).

Martinez hit 12-of-25 from the field with four rebounds and three assists.

The Chaps, who led 17-16 through the first quarter, gained control in the second. They outscored the Wolves 26-18 and led 43-34 at halftime.

That momentum held as COD led by as many as 18 in the third.

Nala Taylor joined Martinez in double figures with 11 points. Taylor had a terrific all-round game, grabbing six rebounds, handing out six assists and creating havoc on defense with five steals.

Both Jaylen Zachary and Makenna Brown scored eight. Madeline Maracich and Kaisji Pryor scored seven each.

Kankakee 59, Chaparrals 50
Makenna Brown led COD with 11 points and Megan Martinez followed with 10, but the Chaparrals trailed early and couldn't get over the hump in Region 4 play Tuesday night.

Down 14-7 through the first quarter, COD answered back and were down 23-19 at halftime.

Brown led in rebounds (nine) and in steals with seven.

The Chaps didn't help themselves at the free throw line, hitting just 7 of 20.
