The Chaparrals improved its winning streak to four straight after taking an impressive doubleheader sweep from host Highland Community College on Monday in Region 4 baseball.
Designated hitter
Cullen Kleinsasser went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles to pace COD 14-9 in the opener.
The Chaps broke open a 3-2 lead with a six-run sixth inning and went on to a 9-4 victory in the second game.
COD (4-8, 4-2 Region 4) is at Kankakee this afternoon in a nine-inning game. First pitch is 3 p.m.
First game: Chaparrals 14, Highland 9
- Down 7-4 after four innings, COD answered back with a six-run fifth and a three-run sixth
- Kleinsasser delivered a two-run single in the sixth
- Matt McBrien, Kleinsasser and Zach Glidewell all doubled in the third, giving COD a 3-1 lead
- Joe Pender, AJ Fulscher, McBrien joined Kleinsasser with three hits
- McBrien and Pender each had two RBI
- RHP Aidan Pienezak went three innings in his start, striking out six, issuing two walks and giving up four hits
- Reliever Michael Tuman (1-0) earned the win in two innings
- Tuman struck out three and gave up two hits
Second game: Chaparrals 9, Highland 4
- COD scored six runs on six hits and sent 10 to the plate in the pivotal sixth
- Kleinsasser's two-out, two-run double scored Pender (single) and Alex Chaltin (walk) to key the sixth
- McBrien went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring two runs and driving in a run
- Pender also earned a multi-hit game (two singles)
- RHP Porter Olson (1-1) drew the start, going five innings, striking out six, walking three and allowing four hits
- Jayce Maranell threw one inning of relief with one strikeout
- Chaltin helped the cause, entering the seventh and facing just three batters
