Hanna becomes both men's and women's head soccer coach

COD has named women's head coach Matt Hanna (right) to the men's head coach and Mike Bona (left) associate head coach for both programs.
Chaparrals Director of Athletics and Recreation Ryan Kaiser has announced that Matt Hanna has been named COD's head men's soccer coach, effective immediately.

Hanna will remain the Chaps' women's head coach and assistant coach Mike Bona has been promoted to associate head coach for both programs.

"Matt has proven his worth time and again to both Chaparrals' soccer programs,'' Kaiser said. "He has the experience, background and the ability to direct the programs at a high level. The improvement that the women's program has seen in his two-plus seasons is noteworthy and he is deserving of this opportunity.''

Since arriving at COD in 2021, Hanna served one season as a men's assistant, then added women's assistant responsibilities in 2022 before being named head women's coach in 2023.

"I'm thrilled to take both programs on,'' Hanna said. "To serve as head coach and grow them together is a great opportunity.''

In his two seasons as head coach for the women's program, the Sydney, Australia, native, guided the Chaps to a 5-11-1 record in 2023 and a 7-8-3 record in 2024, advancing to the Region 4 semifinals where they lost to NJCAA tournament qualifier and Region 4 champion Rock Valley College.

Before arriving at COD, Hanna worked with community clubs as a coach-mentor for volunteer coaches. Prior to that, he worked alongside Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, delivering a wide range of community-based programs.

He is a graduate of Western Sydney University, earning his bachelor's degree in health science in 2014.

Bona recently completed his second season as an assistant women's coach in 2024 and added recruiting coordinator status for men's soccer this past season.

"Having Mike is a massive part of our program and he's done so much to help build the women's team,'' Hanna said. "I have no doubt that we can work together and make the men's team great, too.''

Hanna replaces Zack Ludwig, who stepped down after four years as men's head coach. Ludwig began at COD in 2019, the first of four seasons as women's head coach.
