Joey Vandermeir threw a two-hit shutout in easily his finest game in his Chaparral career in Thursday's 5-0 victory at Morton in Region 4 baseball.
Vandermeir threw 112 pitches in his nine innings and escaped trouble after giving up three walks and five hit batters. He used his teammates for defensive help as he did not issue a strikeout.
COD (14-22, 14-14 Region 4) faces Oakton this afternoon at 3 p.m. at Schaumburg's Wintrust Field.
Chaparrals 5, Morton 0
- Alex Chaltin's single to right scored Matt McBrien, who led off the third with a walk
- COD extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on an Anthony Titone single to left that scored Joe Pender, who singled to center
- After Billy Rogus' sac fly in the seventh pushed COD up 3-0, the Chaps added two runs in the eighth
- McBrien scored an unearned run and Pender's single scored Chaltin, who reached on an error and COD led 5-0
- COD totaled nine hits — all singles
- Chaltin, Pender and Titone each had two hits
- McBrien reached base on three walks
