Alex Chaltin and
Jason Sullivan each homered as the Chaparrals answered with an eight-run third inning in their 11-7 victory over Bryant and Stratton and salvaged a split in their Region 4 baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
COD (11-14, 11-8 Region 4), which has won 11 of its last 17 games after opening the year 0-8, faces a busy week beginning Tuesday afternoon in a 9-inning game at fellow D3 foe Joliet. The Chaps are at home just once this week, Thursday afternoon against Kankakee, and play at McHenry County on Sunday.
Game 1: Bryant and Stratton 8, Chaparrals 1
- Cullen Kleinsasser doubled twice and finished 3-for-3 and COD's only RBI in the loss
- Matt McBrien singled twice and scored COD's only run
- Joe Pender singled and that accounted for the Chaps' final hit, just six total for the game
- Jayce Maranell (0-1) took the loss, going two innings and striking out one, issuing two walks and giving up six hits, eight runs (six earned)
Game 2: Chaparrals 11, Bryant and Stratton 7
- Trailing 6-2 after two innings, COD strung eight runs on five hits for a insurmountable 10-6 lead
- Matt McBrien delivered a two-run single and Chaltin clubbed a two-run homer to center to cap the inning
- Sullivan earned his HR in the fourth on a solo shot to left
- Sullivan leads COD in HRs with his fifth
- Kleinsasser had two hits including a double and drove in two runs
- Chaltin led the Chaps at the plate with three hits
- Sullivan and McBrien each had multi-hit games
- RHP Mike Tuman threw five innings of relief and earned the victory
- Tuman improved to 2-0, striking out two, walking and giving up just one hit and one run (unearned)
