Men's Golf Tee's it Up at Highland Community College

Highland Community College 36
College of DuPage men's golf team tee'd it up at the Highland Community College 36 hole Tournament on Friday, August 22, 2025 in Freeport, Ill.

Six player's were on the course yesterday in Freeport, Ill as the Chaps took to the links to participate in the Highland 36 Friday afternoon.

The first tee jitters were in play as many freshmen players took their first swings in college golf yesterday.  The double shotgun start at DuPage players all over the course in different areas of the back nine.  Matthew Sims led all DuPage golfers by carding a 40 on the first nine holes of the year.  He followed that up with a strong 38 on the front nine which put him in contention to claiming a top 15 spot in this tournament.  Both Freshmen Patrick Davis and Kyrin Abella rightfully struggled on their first collegiate 9 holes shooting 41 and 42 respectfully.  They both flip flopped scores on the front 9 as Davis shot 42 and Abella shot 41 both carding an 83 in the first round.  Jack Boehmke also started on the back nine carding a 47 and finishing with a 43 shooting 90 even in his first collegiate round.  All four of those scores counted in the team scores as the Chaps fired a first round 334 or +46 over par.

The second 18 was much different the second time around.  Sims found his groove and played very consistent through the second round completing the second 18 holes shooting 75.  Sims was +9 on the day with rounds of 78 and 75 and finishing in 15th place for the Chaparrals.  Abella really started to get his legs underneath him in the second round and shot six strokes better on the second 18 firing a round of 77.  With a two round total of 160, Abella finished in 41st place on the day.  Davis was consistent on the day shooting rounds of 83 and 84 on the day. The +23 was good for 66th place alone. Boehmke really improved on his second round shooting 7 strokes better finishing with rounds of 90 and 83 which was good for 79th place.

Overall, the Chaps finished in 11th place out of 21 teams with a total score of 653 or +77 over for the tournament.  The DuPage men were fifteen shots better on the second round firing 319.  Coach Jason Hyatt had this to say about his team. "I was really proud of how Matt played very consistently throughout the whole day, he was glad to get back into competition and finishing in the top 15 will give a boost forward!  Getting Kyrin out there was crucial to getting him on the Midwest golf courses, proud of how he came back on the second 18.  He really showed some guts.  Was ultimately proud of how the team responded after our first round, we came back nicely, and this is only the beginning."
