Hudson Williams drove in five runs to lead the College of DuPage baseball team to a 13-8 victory over the Greenjays of Jackson State Community College on Feb. 26.
Williams delivered the decisive blow in the top of the eighth inning, launching a grand slam to left field as part of a six-run frame that flipped a tight contest into an 11-6 DuPage advantage. He also added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Both offenses were productive in the high-scoring affair, with DuPage collecting 10 hits to Jackson State's eight.
JD Cumbee recorded a sacrifice fly in the second inning to tie the game at two.
Andrew Speh added a solo home run to center field in the fourth.
JB Wies earned the win on the mound, allowing just one run on no hits over four innings while striking out three and walking one.
Zach Glidewell and Cumbee each tallied two hits to pace the Chaps offensively. DuPage showed patience at the plate, drawing 10 walks, with
Kyle Boma, Speh, and
Luke Fordonski each earning two free passes. Boma also stole two bases as the Chaps totaled five steals in the game.
It's the first career win as full time head coach for
Pat Leahy, who had the following to say regarding the win, "It was a solid win. We definitely have some things to clean up, but there also were a lot of positives. Pitchers did a great job getting the ball to the next guy and keeping us in the ball game. The offense came through late when we needed them to."
