A six-time All-American at COD, the Burr Ridge native became the Chaps’ first high jump national champion when he won the 1980 outdoor event at 7 feet, 2 ½ inches, a school record that remains intact. As a freshman in 1979, he was the indoor runner-up, and outdoors, tied for fourth in the high jump, and also placed sixth in the decathlon. At the 1980 indoors, he tied for seventh in the high jump, and outdoors, he placed fifth in the decathlon coupled with his national title. He qualified and competed at the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials, and then advanced his collegiate career at the University of Idaho where he won the 1981 Big Sky Conference indoor and outdoor high jump and decathlon titles.
